The branch of science which relates to the conduction of current through a vacuum or gas or semiconductor is known as *electronics.

Electronics basically deals with electronic devices and their use.

An electronic device is where current flows through a vacuum or a gas or a semiconductor.

Why are electronics necessary in industries?

 Electronics have gained a lot of importance due to various applications in the industry. Electronic devices are capable of performing the following functions:

(i) Rectification: Conversion from a.c. to d.c. is called rectification. An electronic device

can convert a.c. electricity to d.c. power with very high efficiency. This d.c. supply can

use for storage battery charging, d.c field supply. generator, electroplating, etc.

(ii) Amplification: The process of increasing the strength of a weak signal is known as amplification. The electronic device can complete the amplification work and thus act as an amplifier. Amplifiers are used in a variety of ways. For example, amplifiers are used in radio sets where weak signals are amplified so that they can be heard loudly. Similarly, amplifiers are used in

public address system, television, etc.

(iii) Automatic control:  Electronic devices find wide applications in automatic control. As an example,

motor speed, voltage in refrigerator, etc. Can be controlled automatically with help

the device.

(iv) Conversion of light into electricity. Electronic devices can convert light into electricity. This conversion of light into electricity is known as photoelectricity. Photo-electric devices are used in warning alarms, sound recordings on films, etc.

(v) Convert electricity to light: Electronic devices can convert electricity into light.

This valuable property is used in television and

radar.

(vi) Generation: Electronic devices are also capable of converting AC power into DC power at a certain frequency. And when these devices perform this particular function, they are usually referred to as oscillators.
