 What is Vernier Calliper?

Vernier calliper definition : A measuring instrument is used for measuring linear dimensions and used to measure the diameter of round objects with the help of measuring jaws.

vernier calipers construction

The instrument consists of two jaws, at point 1. One Jaw is fixed to the end of the rectangular bar on the zero side, while the other jaw is moving and can slide along the main scale or vernier calliper scale. Each jaw is at the right angle to the main scale and the movable jaw can be fixed in any position by a screw at the top. Two Vernier scales are attached to the movable jaws as shown. Usually, when the two jaws are touching each other, the zero of the vernier scale coincides with the zero of the main scale.

Vernier calliper least count

The least count of vernier callipers is also known as Vernier constant. It is defined as the difference between the main scale division and one Vernier scale division.

Vernier calliper calculation

Now, 10 vernier scale divisions coincide with 9 scale divisions.

          ∴    10 VSD = 9 MSD

                  1VSD = 9/10 MSD

Mathematically, VC = 1 MSD – 1 VSD

                                       =  1 MSD – 9/10 MSD

                                       =  0.1 MSD

Vernier calliper least count formula

In general, n vernier divisions are equal to (n-1) main scale divisions then,

Vernier constant = 1MSD - 1VSD

                          = 1- [n-1/n]

                          = 1/n

∴ Least count of vernier calliper is 0.1 mm.

Abbreviation Used

  • VC is the vernier constant
  • MSD is the main scale division
  • VSD is the vernier scale division
  • LC is the least count

Questions & Answers

1. What is Zero Error?
  • Vernier calliper Zero error is the incorrect reading that an instrument shows when the true value of the quantity measured is zero.

2. Vernier caliper accuracy

  • Vernier calipers can measure accuracy to one-hundredth of a millimeter and one thousand of an inch.

3. Vernier calliper main scale reading

  • The main scale reading is to the left of zero on the Vernier scale. The vernier reading is found by placing the best aligned line between the two scales.

4. Vernier calliper error

  • 1/20 mm = 0.05 mm
5. Vernier caliper function

  • Measure the internal and external dimensions or distance extremely accurately.

6. Vernier calliper least count

  • Least count of vernier calliper is 0.1 mm.
7. Vernier calliper is used to measure

  • A vernier caliper is usually used to measure the diameter of circular objects.
