Definition of an electric field

The space around the source charge where its field can be experienced is called electric field. The charge that experiences this field is called the test charge, its value should be negligible as compared to the source charge.

                                                       Or

The electric field is defined to be the force on a positive test charge divided by the magnitude of the test charge.

                  i.e.

where qo  is a test charge.

we know, according to coulomb's law

Therefore,

⇒Properties of an electric line of forces

  • These lines originate from positive charge and terminate to negative charge.
  • These lines do not form closed loops.
  • The tangent drawn on electric line of forces gives the direction of an electric field.
  • These lines never cross each other.
  • Electric lines of forces are always normal to the conductive surface.
  • Field lines do not exist inside the conductor.
  • The number of lines that originate or terminating on a charge is proportional to the magnitude of the charge.
  • The number of electric lines of forces per unit area represents the intensity of magnitude of electric lines of forces.
